Contrary to what most people believe, reality TV is REAL. We cast real people with real stories. Since it’s a common misconception, I’m here to confirm The Circle is an unscripted show with regular degular people! Contestants aren’t memorizing a script or given multiple takes for a scene. Sure, there are story producers nudging angles and don’t get me started on the magic of editing, but it’s as real as reality TV gets. Read on to find other common questions answered, including if the show has been affected by the novel coronavirus.
Where is The Circle filmed?
While the first season opened with establishing shots of the Chicago skyline, The Circle was actually filmed in Salford, a district in England in Manchester last fall. Much like the show itself, the apartment building is real too! It’s an actual, residential apartment building called the Adelphi Wharf 1. It’s also the same location where the original version, The Circle U.K. was filmed, as well as The Circle France and The Circle Brazil.
When will The Circle season 2 premiere?
After the first season was a streaming success, Netflix officially renewed The Circle for a second and third season in March. (Thanks for keeping me employed, ya’ll!) Since the announcement, our casting team has been carefully reviewing each application. The series will allegedly make its return in early 2021. Many people are asking if the global pandemic will postpone production. Luckily for us, The Circle is the perfect show to film during quarantine! We will most likely start filming season 2 this fall.
Series creator Stephen Lambert told The Hollywood Reporter that he is realistic, not optimistic about a number of seasons of The Circle will film this fall.
“We’re creating a huge fortress, a sort of sealed environment where we’ll be able to control who comes in,” he says. “Obviously the subjects are already isolated, so it suits what’s going on, but we’ll have contestants tested beforehand and we’re discussing having them quarantined after they arrive in England.”

How does The Circle work?
Contestants are sequestered in a one-bedroom apartment and don’t meet in person. They can only interact with each other via direct message on a voice-activated platform called The Circle. Players display photos and videos on their profile, allowing them to be whoever they want. It’s as if Big Brother, Catfish and Instagram had a baby. Some choose to play themselves, a version of themselves, or someone completely different. Players are periodically ranked and unpopular contestants are blocked. Those voted at the top are “Influencers,” and determine who gets eliminated and sent home. However, before they pack their bags and leave for good, they have a chance to visit any contestant they want.
How much do The Circle contestants get paid?
Joey Sasso was voted the most popular player on The Circle season one, winning a grand prize of $100,000. Sammie Cimarelli won the Fan Favorite award and took home $10,000.
